LEN

Returns the number of characters in a text string.

Available in All versions

Syntax

LEN(text)

The character count as a number.

Argument	Required	Description
`text`	Yes	The text whose length you want.

Count

LEN counts how many characters the text contains (7).

=LEN(A2)

Counts every character, including spaces.

LEN reads the cell's underlying value, not its display format — if formatting matters, convert the number with TEXT first.
